All sheep and goats born after 9 July 2005 must be tagged with an individual identification number within 6 months of birth if housed overnight, within 9 months of birth if not housed overnight, or before the animal leaves its holding of birth, whichever is sooner. Each tag must be indelibly printed, carry the letters UK, a 6 digit flock or herd number of the holding of birth, and a further individual animal identification number. In England & Wales individual animal identification numbers will be assigned without leading zero's eg UK 800675 145, whilst for Scottish locations numbers will be assigned with leading zero's eg UK 500675 000145. Management information may be added to official tags as long as it is kept separate and distinct from the official mark. If this is not possible (due to the size of the tag) then it must go onto a separate tag. Any tag which is lost must be replaced with either an identical replacement for the tag that has been lost or a new 'R' (red) tag which must be printed with the keeper's flockmark, a new individual number, and the letter R after the animal's individual number. It is an offence to move sheep which are not properly tagged. Such sheep cannot be accepted by markets or abattoirs and therefore have no monetary value.
