Take action and help protect your sheep from rustlers for as little as 3p per sheep - 02.04.2014
With livestock rustling on the rise it is imperative that you take action and stay vigilant.
NFU Mutual estimated a 170% increase in sheep rustling from 2010 to 2011 and a further 3.6% increase in 2012.
The value of livestock stolen from across the UK in 2012 was around £6 million with a total of 69,000 sheep stolen. Figures based on insurance claims show that in 2011 sheep rustling cost Welsh Farmers a staggering £700,000, and cost Scottish Farmers approximately £250,000 in 2011 and 2012.
Sheep rustling can have an enormous financial impact and an emotional effect, as losses of valuable breeding lines are very difficult, if not impossible, to replace.
Reports state that ‘It is important that farmers realise that sheep are being stolen by people with livestock experience so it pays to be careful about casual chat. These are organised gangs with men and dogs who know what they are doing.”
With such a sharp rise in sheep rustling it is essential that you take preventative measures to protect your livestock. It may seem obvious but one on the most important things you can do is stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the police. As well as ensuring that your gates are completely secure with strong fences and gates fitted with locks.
Recent reports from farmers suggest feeding ewe’s away from roadside locations and varying feed times each day could also help prevent sheep rustling.
Distinguishing your sheep is a possible deterrent that could help secure your flock, making it easier for you and your neighbours to keep a wary eye out for them, and could make them less appealing to rustlers as they will be obviously more nervous stealing distinguished animals.
Si-Ro-Mark branding fluid allows you to distinguish your sheep and could help protect them from rustlers for as little as 3p per sheep. It’s long lasting and evident mark could make sheep less appealing than unmarked sheep to rustlers.
It is the world’s most widely used branding fluid and Si-Ro-Mark’s unique formulation creates a distinct, bright mark that will stay on a sheep’s fleece for up to one year when applied at shearing. At a cost of 3p per sheep, each 5 litre can of Si-Ro-Mark marks up to 1,000 sheep when applied with a branding iron, which can be seen as a very small price to pay when rustlers could cost you thousands in a single raid.
Si-Ro-Mark can also be used with confidence in any weather as its Lanolin based formulation means it can be applied to wet or dry fleeces and it will remain visible under the even most extreme weather conditions.
It is available in 5 bright, clearly visible colours – red, blue, orange, green and purple allowing you to use your traditional mark and colour with the reassuring performance you should expect from a unique 21st century manufacturing process.
Mr Davies from Carmarthenshire is just one of thousands of sheep farmers worldwide who trust SI-RO-MARK sheep branding fluid.
“I changed my branding fluid to SI-RO-MARK, after a recommendation from a friend. I needed a fluid that stayed on the fleece from shearing, right up to lambing. I just don’t have the time these days to rebrand my sheep. And it’s got to be completely scourable, if I’m to get the best fleece value. That’s why I use SI-RO-MARK. Nothing performs better – I’m sure of that.”
